When I look at Indian sports today, I see enormous talent… but broken systems. I see passion… but no platform. I see dreams… but no support.
And somewhere inside, I also see my younger self—the boy running barefoot on dusty grounds in Meerut, fighting for a chance, fighting for recognition, fighting for dignity.
That struggle shaped me. The sweat, the failures, the politics, the unjust selections… everything.
And today, as a sports activist and reformer, my fight continues—not for myself, but for every athlete of India.
This article is not just a report.
It is my field research, my personal experience, my ground reality, and my vision for India 2030.
THE VISION
“To build an India where every child—rich or poor, rural or urban—gets access to world-class sports infrastructure, transparent opportunities, and a fair chance to become a champion.”
THE MISSION
“To identify real infrastructure gaps, expose systemic weaknesses, and propose long-term, athlete-centric reform models for India’s sports ecosystem.”
Introduction — Why Infrastructure Matters More Than Motivation
You can motivate a child every day.
But motivation cannot replace:
- a proper ground
- a trained coach
- good equipment
- a running track
- a gym
- an injury rehab center
A dream needs support, not just spirit.
99% of Indian athletes quit not because they lack talent,
but because the system lacks infrastructure.
So let’s break down the 10 biggest sports infrastructure gaps in India — based on my experience as an athlete and my current role as a national-level sports reformer.
- Lack of Basic Sports Grounds
In many villages and small towns:
- no football ground
- no athletics track
- no indoor hall
- no open gym
Children play on:
- roads
- empty plots
- school corridors
No ground = no foundation.
This is India’s first and biggest failure.
Problem: 70% of India lives in rural areas but 80% of facilities are concentrated in cities.
Solution:
A national program—“One Block, One Ground Mission 2030”
with mandatory government + CSR partnerships.
- Poor Maintenance of Existing Facilities
Many stadiums are built only to inaugurate and photograph.
After that:
- broken washrooms
- no grass cutting
- damaged tracks
- dust-filled gyms
- unsafe lighting
- unused multipurpose halls
India does not suffer from lack of infrastructure as much as corruption in maintenance.
Solution:
A transparent sports facility audit every year under the Right to Sports Act.
- No High-Performance Centres (HPC) Outside Metro Cities
Athletes in:
- Meerut
- Saharanpur
- Jalandhar
- Ranchi
- Bhopal
- Guwahati
- Udaipur
…have talent but no access to:
- sports science labs
- biomechanics analysis
- psychologist sessions
- nutrition experts
- conditioning coaches
Why do champions have to migrate to Bangalore or Hyderabad?
Solution:
20 Regional High-Performance Hubs by 2030.
- Outdated Equipment — Old Coaching Methods
In many academies, I still see:
- 1990s training drills
- low-quality balls
- rusted gym plates
- torn nets
- body-weight only training
You cannot produce world champions using museum-level equipment.
Solution:
Mandatory equipment modernization every 3 years.
- No Scientific Coaching Ecosystem
India needs:
- strength & conditioning coaches
- data analysts
- performance video analysts
- sports psychologists
- physios trained in athletic rehab
Coaching in India still depends on just experience, not science.
Solution:
National Sports Science Academy (NSSA) under the Sports Ministry.
- Insufficient Female-Friendly Sports Spaces
Girls face:
- unsafe grounds
- no separate washrooms
- lack of female coaches
- family restrictions due to infrastructure issues
Sports cannot grow if 50% of India is not included.
Solution:
Every district stadium must have mandatory women-only facilities.
- Poor Indoor Infrastructure — The Biggest Hidden Gap
Badminton, table tennis, fencing, boxing, taekwondo, weightlifting…
These sports require indoor halls.
But most towns lack:
- proper flooring
- lighting
- temperature control
- safety pads
Indoor sports = Olympic medals, but India underinvests here.
Solution:
“India Indoor Project 2030” to build 500 multi-sport indoor halls.
- No Injury Management or Rehab Ecosystem
I’ve seen young athletes ending their careers due to:
- untreated ankle sprains
- ACL tears
- shin splints
- back injuries
- shoulder strains
No physio, no rehab, no guidance.
This is where careers die silently.
Solution:
India needs district-level sports medicine units.
- Zero Infrastructure for Grassroots Football, Athletics, and Hockey
These are India’s biggest participation sports, but they lack:
- synthetic tracks
- turf grounds
- football academies
- quality grassroots tournaments
- regional leagues
You cannot develop national stars without grassroots platforms.
Solution:
Every state must run:
- State Football League
- State Athletics League
- State Hockey League
- Infrastructure without Management — The Ultimate Failure
Even when stadiums exist, they remain:
❌ locked
❌ unused
❌ controlled by politics
❌ closed for local athletes
❌ filled with bureaucracy
This is the most painful reality.
Solution:
Bring professional facility managers like Europe and USA.
My Personal Reflection — Why This Fight Is Personal for Me
I have lived the struggles:
- running on broken grounds
- playing with torn boots
- facing selection politics
- watching talented kids cry
- seeing careers end due to injury
- witnessing corruption kill dreams
As a former footballer, I felt helpless.
As an activist today, I feel responsible.
I am using my platform to fix what once broke me.
This fight will continue till
every athlete in India gets infrastructure, dignity, and opportunity.
My Reform Blueprint: India Sports Infrastructure Model 2030
✔ Nationwide Sports Mapping
Identify what exists, what is missing, and where.
✔ One Ground Per Block Mission
7000+ blocks = 7000 grounds by 2030.
✔ India Indoor Project
500 new multi-sport indoor stadiums.
✔ Women-Friendly Sports Zones
Secure facilities + women coaches + dedicated timing.
✔ Sports Medicine Network
District-level rehab, physio & sports science centres.
✔ PPP Model for Stadium Management
Government + private + community ownership.
✔ Transparent Stadium Access
Athletes should not beg to enter their own facilities.
Motivational Quote
“A stadium is not a building. It is a factory where dreams are manufactured. India will rise the day every child gets the right factory.” – Jatin Tyagi
Conclusion — India Must Build, Not Blame
India does not lack talent.
India lacks tracks, fields, halls, and systems.
If we fix infrastructure,
India will produce athletes the world has never seen.
This is not just a reform plan.
This is my personal mission.
And I promise…
I will fight till the last breath for India’s sporting future.
